Doggy Care for When There is a Chill in
the Air
DoodyCalls Provides Winter Pet Care Tips
PALMYRA, Virg. – It’s that time
of the year again, where the harsh winter weather can cause
complications for your favorite furry friend on his/her outdoor
adventures. And even inside the home, common holiday traditions
can threaten the dog’s safety. DoodyCalls, the first
full-service pet waste removal franchise, offers advice how
to keep pets healthy and comfortable during the winter months.
Winter Pet Care:
- Snow- New scents, sounds, and landmarks can create
confusion, making it easy for dogs to get lost. Do not
leave your dog unattended and avoid letting your dog wander
alone in the snow. Before taking your precious
pet that has long fur on the bottom of their paw for a
walk in the snow, apply a tiny amount of Vaseline, cooking
oil, or PAM spray to his/her feet. This helps prevent ice
balls from sticking between the pads and toes of the feet.
Make sure to use only edible oil, as most dogs will try
licking their paws after the application.
- Frostbite- Limit the amount of time your pet is
outside. Dog coats and sweaters can help provide extra
warmth. Ear tips are especially vulnerable to frostbite.
Remove any snow or ice on the body immediately. Thaw any
suspected frostbitten areas by applying warm, moist towels.
Contact your local veterinarian for more severe cases.
- Salt- Salt can irritate and cause burns to a dog’s
feet, tongue, and mouth. If you are walking your pet on
salted streets or sidewalks, gently rub the bottom of the
feet as soon as your dog is back home to remove any residue.
A great new alternative to the conventional salt based
method for deicing is the Safe Paw Ice Melter product.
It is 100% safe and eliminates the danger of exposing pets
to the harmful salt.
- Antifreeze- Keep all containers away from pets,
as even the smallest amount can be deadly. Promptly clean
up spills to avoid any licks. Antifreeze solutions may
exist in your driveway or garage.
Special Holiday Tips
- Avoid “Special Treats”- Alcoholic
beverages and holiday goodies, especially with chocolate,
can be harmful and toxic for your pet.
- Seasonal Plants- Popular holiday plants, such
as mistletoe, holly, poinsettias, and pine have various
levels of toxicity and can be dangerous when consumed.
- Decorations- Certain tree ornaments, tinsel, ribbon,
and other string-like decorations may seem harmless, but
can cause irritation, intestinal obstruction, and choking
if ingested.
