City of Chesapeake Pet-Related Laws and Ordinances
- City of Chesapeake Pet Laws - The City of Chesapeake has published a helpful flyer that outlines all ordinances associated with dogs and other pets. City code (Sec. 10-23) declares that allowing an animal to defecate on property without cleaning it up is illegal.
- For added convenience, Chesapeake Animal Control has published a list of new dog laws (follow link) that went into affect in January 2007.
- Chesapeake Dog Licenses - All dogs four (4) months or older are required to have a license in the City of Chesapeake; this site provides complete details and explains all that is involved with getting a license.
City of Chesapeake Dog Parks
- The City of Chesapeake’s Parks and Recreation Dept. oversees many parks that allow dogs, including two off-leash parks at City Park and the Western Branch Park and Sports Complex. The City has also published an excellent brochure outlining rules and regulations for dog parks.
Humane Societies and Animal Shelters
- Chesapeake Humane Society - The Humane Society is a shelter-less operation that works with Chesapeake Animal Control and other private shelters. The Society focuses on improving pet ownership skills and reducing the population of unwanted pets through a variety of outreach educational programs.
- Chesapeake Animal Control - Chesapeake Animal Control (CAC) runs a shelter located at 3807 Cook Blvd., in the Cavalier Industrial Park. CAC’s website provides a great deal of information about animal ownership and has an updated list of animals to adopt in Chesapeake.
City of Chesapeake Rescue Organizations
- Chesapeake Rescue Organizations - This site offers a comprehensive list of rescue organizations compiled by the Tidewater Kennel Club.
- Animal Assistance League of Virginia - The Animal Assistance League is a non-profit shelter that places a variety of pets for adoption. The shelter is located at 1149 New Mill Dr., Chesapeake, VA 23322.
- Animal Rescue of Tidewater - This group is a rescue organization working to help homeless animals throughout the region.
- K-9 New Life Center - An all-breed rescue organization located in Virginia Beach, but serving the Hampton Roads area. Visit their website to obtain schedules for their visits to local area Petsmarts.
- Hope For Life Rescue, Inc. - A rescue organization that is dedicated to the rescue of abandoned, abused and left behind street animals. This unique organization does not have set adoption fees and has been established since 2002. Follow this link to read more.
