Events
- Reston Pet Fiesta - The Reston Pet Fiesta is an annual event held each May in Reston. We’ve been to the event ourselves and it’s a lot of fun. There’s a dog walk, food, vendors, non-profit groups, and a fashion show. Proceeds from the event benefit the volunteer groups Gooddogz.org and RestonDogs.
Other Dog Organizations and Ideas That We Support
- MetroPets - MetroPets is the most comprehensive online pet directory in the Metropolitan, DC area. It includes information about dog parks, non-profits, vets, rescue groups, and anything else you might imagine. Its mission statement declares, "MetroPets Online promotes the adoption of homeless animals and the well-being of companion animals in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area through the smart use of Internet technology." Help them fulfill their mission and check out their site!
- Metro DC Dalmation Rescue Group - The Metro DC Dalmation Rescue group works to find homes for Dalmatians in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC.
- Virginia and Maryland Collie Rescue Group - The Virginia and Maryland Collie Rescue Group has placed more than 100 collies since it was founded in 2005. This is a non-profit group that is always seeking volunteers. Visit their website to find more information about adopting a dog, volunteering, or purchasing merchandise.
- Greyhound Pets of America (GPA) Northern Virginia Chapter - The Northern Virginia Chapter of Greyhound Pets of American looks for homes for Greyhounds that do not or no longer qualify for the track. Visit their website to read their newsletter and find more information about adopting a Greyhound or volunteering.
- Northern Virginia Sheltie Rescue Group - The Northern Virginia Sheltie Rescue Group’s website states that it: "seeks to rescue, rehabilitate, and place lost, abused, and abandoned Shelties where they will be loved, protected, and well cared for." Visit their website to learn more about this tremendous group.
- Virginia German Shepherd Rescue (VGSR) Group - The Virginia German Shepherd Rescue Group rescues, rehabilitates, and finds homes for German Shepherds in Virginia, and Washington, DC. As of June 2007 it had placed over 1,200 dogs. We have met members of this group at different pet events and they are always very friendly and professional. If you are looking to adopt a German shepherd you should give them a call before you contact a breeder.
- Cocker Spaniel rescue group of Northern Virginia (NOVA) - The Cocker Spaniel rescue group of Northern Virginia helps place Cocker Spaniels in loving homes. Their mailing address is in Newington, but they work in the entire area. They have a great newsletter and sponsor pet loss support groups as well as a wide range of different social activities.
- Labrador Retriever Rescue Group - The Labrador Retriever Rescue Group (LRR) seeks to rescue, rehabilitate and place abandoned and unwanted labs in Washington, DC, Northern Virginia including Fairfax and Loudoun Counties, as well as in parts of Pennsylvania and Delaware.
- GoodDogz.org - GoodDogz.org is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to educating potential dog owners on dog adoption and care. It supports the efforts of rescue groups. It believes that by assisting with good dog-owner matches, it gives each family the best opportunity for a life-long relationship with its new dog and helps to keep dogs out of shelters.
