Local Laws and Ordinances that Affect Dog Owners
- Dog Licenses - All dog owners in Washington, DC must have a dog license. The DC Department of Health website explains the dog licensing regulations in the District of Coumbia.
- Washington, DC Pooper Scooper Law - Washington, DC has a pooper scooper law that requires owners pick up after their dog. Seeing-eye dogs are exempt from this regulation. The complete ordinance can be read on the Washington, DC bar association’s website.
Humane Societies and Animal Shelters
- Washington, DC Humane Society - The Washington DC Humane Society (WHS) was established in 1870 and provides protection from cruelty and neglect. The WHS enforces anti-cruelty laws.
- Washington Animal Rescue League - The Washington Animal Rescue League (WARL) is a non-profit shelter equipped with a full service medical center. WARL focuses on animal welfare including mental and physical health. It has been featured in the BARK Magazine article titled "Place of Dignity."
