The way Jeff Bolen tells it, his business of picking up is continuing to pick up.

Bolen, a Midlands builder, also is owner of the local franchise of Doody Calls (doodycalls.com/ south- carol inacolumbia/), an animal waste removal service now in its fourth year.

Larry Little, who attends to the pooper scooper chores for the company, says, “We put in about 300 miles a week with customers from Chapin to Blythewood to the VA Hospital.” That’s the broad outline of his route that includes downtown Columbia, Lexington, Irmo, Northeast Columbia, West Columbia, Cayce, and surrounding areas.

With more than 100 clean-up stops a week, Bolen says Little has about as much work as he can handle, and it appears another employee and another truck are likely in the year ahead. Pet waste removal is just part of an estimated $50 billion that Americans spend annually on pets and pet services, according to industry statistics.
